										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This RSK6001GP Rectifier Assembly Diode Kit is manufactured for Stamford Generators and is used on the HCI434, HCI534, HCM434 and HCM534 models. The diode kit is made to fit on the generator ends and contains 3 positive diodes, 3 negative diodes and a surge suppressor. Theses diodes included are responsible for providing power to the Alternator rotor so it can induce voltage to the main windings of a Stamford alternator. A faulty diode may produce several failing conditions that will cause further damage to the alternator, including increased excitation which may damage the exciter rotor, or loss of voltage that will end up causing overload to the voltage regulator. All the components of this kit are mounted in parallel with the revolving field coil. Once the diode kit is assembled it is attached to the main rotor of the alternator. The unit should be fitted using a calibrated torque wrench as the unit is delicate and needs the correct torque to work efficiently. These units are useful when needing to replace a diode that has blown in a rectifier. Replacement of all relevant parts is easiest, as it is often difficult to determine which diode is faulty.</p>

The name varistor is a combination of variable and resistor and is only used for non-ohmic varying resistors. This is an electric component with an electrical resistant that varies with the applied voltage. It is also known as a voltage dependent resistor and has a nonlinear, non-ohmic current voltage characteristic. This is a relationship between electric current through a circuit, device or material and the corresponding voltage across it. The varistor is similar to a diode but in contrast to a diode however it has the same characteristic for both directions of traversing current. At  a low voltage it has a high electrical resistance which decreases as the voltage is raised.</p>
<h3><strong>Characteristics of the YMD-002 varistor</strong></h3>
<p>These units are used as control or compensation elements in circuits, either to provide optimal operating conditions or to protect sensitive and delicate components against damage by transient voltages. When these units are used as protective devices they shunt the current created by excess voltage away from the delicate and sensitive components which would otherwise sustain possible terminal damage. The most common type of varistor is the metal oxide varistor also known as an MOV. This consists of a ceramic mass of zinc oxide in a matrix of other metal oxides and is sandwiched between two metal plates. These plates are the electrodes.</p>

A diode is in effect a switch which allows electrical current to flow in one direction only. They are primarily used in power supply operation. The rectifier diodes can handle higher current flow than regular diodes and are used in order to change alternating current produced by the alternator which cannot be used by the machine into direct current which can be used by the machine. They are designed as discrete components or as integrated circuits and are usually fabricated from silicon although other materials such as selenium and germanium are used.</p>
<h3><strong>Characteristics of the SSAYEC432 Diode Kit</strong></h3>
<p>The first step to take when the rectifier is showing signs of incorrect functioning is to test the diodes and surge suppressor or varistor in the rectifier. The kit consists of 2 varistors with 3 negative diodes and 3 positive diodes. The threads on the diodes are all metric and the only difference between the RSK5001 and the RSK6001 is that the RSK6001 has 2 surge suppressors compared to only one surge suppressor or varistor with the RSK5001 rectifier assembly kit. The diodes are clearly marked with red leads for the positive or forward diodes and black leads for the negative or reverse diodes.</p>
<h3><strong>Technical characteristics of the RSK6001GP Rectifier Assembly Base</strong></h3>
<p>The rectifier converts alternating current induced in the exciter rotor windings into direct current to magnetise the main rotor poles. The rectifier comprises two semicircular annular positive and negative plates each with three diodes. In addition to connecting to the main rotor, the direct current output of the rectifier also connects to a matched pair of varistors, one at each end of the plates. These additional components protect the rectifier from voltage spikes and surge voltages that may be present on the rotor under various loading conditions of the alternator. Diodes provide a low resistance current in one direction only. The varistors can be checked for faults by examining them for outward signs of overheating like discolouration, blisters or melting and disintegration.  The varistors should also be checked with a multimeter. If a fault is found then both varistors must be replaced with a matched pair.</p>

In addition to connecting to the main rotor, the direct current output of the rectifier also connects to a varistor. The varistor protects the rectifier from voltage spikes and surge voltage that may be present on the rotor under various loading conditions of the alternator. Diodes provide a low resistance to current in one direction only.</p>
<h3><strong>Replacement of the diodes in the rectifier assembly</strong></h3>
<p>The diodes are either negative or positive and must be fitted to the corresponding plate. After disconnecting the diodes at the terminal end test the units individually and measure the voltage drop across the diode in the forward direction using the diode test function on a multimeter. Then measure the resistance across the diode in the reverse direction. If any of the diodes are faulty replace the full set of six diodes in the rectifier. First remove all the diodes then place a small amount of heat sink compound only to the base of the replacement diodes. It is known as a voltage dependent resistor and it has a nonlinear, non-ohmic current voltage characteristic that is similar to a diode but where the diode is either positive or negative the varistor has the same characteristic for both directions of traversing current. The varistor is an electrical component with an electrical resistance that varies with the applied voltage. It is also know as a voltage dependent resistor and it has nonlinear, non-Ohmic current voltage characteristic, which is a relationship between electric current through a circuit, device or material and the corresponding voltage across it, that is similar to a diode. In contrast to a diode however it has the same characteristic for both directions of traversing current. At low voltage it has a high electrical resistance which decreases as the voltage is raised.</p>
<h3><strong>Characteristics of the YMD-001 varistor</strong></h3>
<p>The varistor is used as control or compensation elements in circuits either to provide optimal operating conditions or to protect sensitive components against transient voltages. When used as protection devices they shunt the current created by excessive voltage away from delicate and sensitive components. The most common type of varistor is the metal oxide varistor. This type of varistor contains a ceramic mass of zinc oxide grains in a matrix of other metal oxides such as small amounts of bismuth, cobalt or manganese, sandwiched between two metal plates which are the electrodes. They can fail for two reasons namely a lightning strike where the energy involved is many orders of magnitude greater than the varistor can handle or cumulative degradation. The lightning strike may melt, burn or even vaporise the varistor. The cumulative degradation is caused by surges which occur over time. Each successive surge will weaken the protective capability of the unit. In this condition the varistor is not visibly damaged and outwardly appears functional but it no longer offers protection. The diode kit is made to fit on the generator ends and contains 3 positive diodes, 3 negative diodes and a surge suppressor. These components are mounted in parallel with the revolving field coil. Once the diode kit is assembled it is attached to the main rotor of the alternator. The unit should be fitted using a calibrated torque wrench as the unit is delicate and needs the correct torque to work efficiently. These units are useful when needing to replace a diode that has blown in a rectifier. As it is often difficult to tell which diode is faulty, replacement of all relevant parts is easiest.</p>
