Weekly Maintenance
• Run the generator (typically no-load, automatic transfer switch exercise cycle.)
• Verify that the unit ran and has no alarms or warnings.
• Ensure adequate fuel levels.
• Ensure that the generator is in “Auto” mode, for automatic startup.
• Check that the circuit breaker is closed.
• Make sure there are no fluid leaks.
Monthly Maintenance
• Check engine coolant level.
• Check engine oil level.
• Check the battery charger.
Why standby generator maintenance matters
A standby generator can stand idle for weeks and then has to start and take the load within seconds when the power fails. Most failures at that moment come from small things that a regular check would have found: a flat or corroded battery, low coolant, old diesel, a blocked fuel or air filter, or a loose connection on the changeover switch.
Keep a simple log next to the generator and note each run, the running hours, the oil and coolant levels and any warning on the controller. Service the engine at the hours or interval its manufacturer recommends, and replace filters, belts and hoses before they fail rather than after.
