Happy Spring Day! 5% Off Selected Automatic Transfer Switches
Happy Spring Day! The first of September is a good excuse to open the windows, dust off the braai — and, if you are responsible for keeping the power on somewhere, to check that your changeover gear is ready for what comes next. To mark the day, we are running 5% off selected automatic transfer switches at Generator Parts. Browse the Spring Day specials here.
Why spring is the right time to sort out your ATS
Spring in South Africa is the quiet window between two demanding seasons. Winter has just finished putting maximum load on the grid, and the summer storm season — with its lightning strikes, tripped feeders and unplanned outages — is only a few weeks away. It is the one time of year when you can take a standby system offline, test it properly and fix what you find, without an emergency forcing your hand.
An automatic transfer switch is the part of that system nobody thinks about until it fails. It sits between the mains and your generator, watching the incoming supply, and when the mains drop it starts the changeover sequence automatically. Get it right and an outage is a flicker. Get it wrong and you have a generator running happily outside while the building stays dark.
Which automatic transfer switches are on special
The Spring Day promotion covers selected units from our YES1-GP and YEQ1-GP automatic changeover switch ranges, in both 3-pole and 4-pole configurations, with ratings from 63A right through to 630A. That spread covers everything from a small standby installation to a substantial three-phase site.
Choosing between them comes down to two questions. First, what current does the installation actually draw — always size the switch to the load and the incoming breaker, not to the generator alone. Second, do you need to switch the neutral? A 4-pole switch breaks the neutral along with the three phases, which is what you want where the generator has its own earth reference or where the installation requires full isolation. If you are unsure which applies to your site, speak to our team before you order — it is a five-minute conversation that avoids an expensive mistake.
Three checks worth doing this month
Whether or not you are buying anything, spring is the time to run through the basics.
- Test a real changeover. Not a panel indicator — an actual simulated mains failure, with load on the system. Time how long the transfer takes and confirm it transfers back cleanly when the mains return.
- Check the contacts and terminations. Heat cycling through winter loosens connections. Look for discolouration, arcing marks or any smell of hot plastic, and re-torque terminals to specification.
- Confirm the control side still works. The switch is only half the system — the controller has to see the fault and issue the start signal. A flat starter battery or a failed sensing fuse will strand you just as effectively as a failed switch.
Ready before the storms
If any of those checks turned up something you would rather not rely on through summer, this is a good week to replace it. The Spring Day specials are live now, and you can see the full automatic changeover switch range if the unit you need is not among the discounted models.
From all of us at Generator Parts — enjoy the sunshine, and here is to a summer with the lights on.
