Cylinder Head Gasket Failure: Signs and Fixes
A cylinder head gasket has to seal combustion pressure, coolant and oil across the same joint, at temperatures that swing hundreds of degrees every time the set starts. When it lets go, the symptoms are usually obvious in hindsight and easy to miss at the time.
Signs your cylinder head gasket has failed
- White smoke that smells sweet — coolant burning in the cylinder.
- Bubbles in the radiator or expansion tank while the engine runs.
- Coolant loss with no visible external leak.
- A milky film under the oil filler cap or on the dipstick.
- Pressurisation that pushes coolant out of the overflow within minutes of starting.
One of these can have another explanation. Two or more together, and the head is coming off.
What actually causes it
Gaskets rarely fail on their own. The usual chain of events is heat: a water pump with a worn impeller, a blocked radiator core, or low coolant lets the head warp very slightly, and the fire ring loses its grip. Other common causes are uneven torque on reassembly, a head that was never skimmed flat, and running the set for long periods far below its rated load.
Do the job once
Replacing the gasket without addressing the cause simply schedules the next failure. With the head off, have it pressure-tested and skimmed, check the valve components for seat and guide wear, and inspect the bores. Replace the full gasket set rather than the head gasket alone, and fix the cooling system fault that started it.
If the engine has done serious hours, this is also the moment to consider piston rings and bearing sets while everything is accessible. We stock cylinder head gaskets across the diesel engine spares range, including for Lovol 1000 series engines.
Catch it before it happens
Temperature is the enemy, so instrument for it. Temperature and pressure senders feeding sensor alarms will shut a set down over a rising coolant temperature long before the gasket gives up — the case we make in the benefits of a sensor alarm.
