Fuel Solenoid Faults That Stop a Generator Dead
A generator that cranks strongly and never fires, or that starts and dies after two seconds, is very often not a fuel supply problem at all. The fuel solenoid is the electrically operated valve that lets diesel reach the injection pump — and when it fails, the engine behaves exactly like a set that has run out of fuel.
Pull and hold, or energised to run
There are two common arrangements and they fail differently. An energise-to-run solenoid must be powered the whole time the engine runs; lose the feed and the engine stops instantly. An energise-to-stop type does the opposite, cutting fuel only when the shutdown signal arrives. Many pull-and-hold solenoids also have two windings — a heavy pull coil to move the plunger and a light hold coil to keep it there. If the pull circuit works but the hold circuit does not, the set fires and dies within a second or two. That symptom alone narrows the fault right down.
Fuel solenoid or fuel supply?
Listen for the click as the solenoid pulls in when the key goes to run — no click and you are looking at the solenoid, its relay, or the feed. A healthy click that still will not run points back at fuel filters, air in the lines or the lift pump.
Check the easy things first
- Battery voltage under crank — solenoids are the first thing to misbehave on a tired battery.
- The feed and earth at the solenoid itself, measured while cranking, not at rest.
- Corroded spade terminals and chafed looms, especially on outdoor sets.
- The stop circuit and the shutdown output on the controller.
On an automatic set the shutdown path runs through the genset controller, so a controller output fault presents as a solenoid fault. If the set is part of an automated installation, our automated setup guide covers how those signals are wired.
Keep a spare on the shelf
A solenoid is a small part that takes a whole set offline, which makes it an obvious spare to hold. We stock solenoids and related fuel system components within the diesel engine spares range, including for Lovol and other G-Drive engines.
